Founded in 2014, the Family Legal Clinic (FLC) is a pro-bono legal service and the first of its kind in the country. They are also registered as an NGO. FLC focuses on providing pro bono legal consultations and awareness in the areas of family law and prevention of domestic violence law. Presently, there are 17 lawyers registered with them giving pro bono time to consultations of who are specially trained by the Society of Health Education (SHE) on prevention of ‘gender based violence’ and communication with survivors.
On the occasion of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, Bank of Maldives had made a donation of MVR 50,000 to them. The donation was handed over during a ceremony held earlier this morning by BML’s CEO and Managing Director, Mr. Tim Sawyer. It was received from FLC by the Co-Chairperson, Ms. Shafeea Riza.
As per the Bank, the donation will be utilized for the Legal Aid Program. FLC details that this will cover the provision of free legal services, advertisement, outreach program and collection of legal aid statistics of FLC.
The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Woman is annually observed on 25th November for the purpose of raising awareness and to galvanize action to end gender based violence faced by women and girls all over the world.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Tim Sawyer, extended his gratitude towards FLC for their commitment to eliminating violence against women.
