Dhiraagu & Women In Tech Maldives Marks The Conclusion Of “Girls In Data” Program

Yesterday, “Girls in Data” program hosted in collaboration with Dhiraagu and Women in Tech Maldives concluded. The 1.5-month program was the first data literacy initiative in the Maldives that was solely focused on teaching girls.

The online program which began in May 28,2022 educated partakes on how to collect, process and interpret data and draw conclusions based on data analysis results. As an extension of this program, participants conducted practical data collection activities at the Maldives National Library as well. A total of 25 girls aged between 10 and 13 took part in this program and presented their projects which highlighted the skills they were taught during the span of the course.

While speaking about the program, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager of Dhiraagu, Bishaara Hameed said “In an increasingly data intensive world, data science and data analytics will be an important skill set regardless of the career path. Introducing children, especially girls to this data literacy programme and instilling their confidence to explore the field at a young age was one of the key objectives of Girls in Data”.

Vice President of Women in Tech Maldives, Mariam Asna stated that she hoped the program paved for learning new things and sparking interest in the data science field. She urged participants to advance forward in the field with the knowledge and lessons gained in the program.

Participants shared their experience of the program and remarked that they learned the important of data processing and the different tools used in the process as well. In this regard they added the program provided a platform for girls to learn skills that can applied in the data science field and had shown that numerous opportunities await at the field too.

The joint initiative “Girls in Data” is the introductory program of a series of programs planned to be carried out in various parts of the country. Since 2019, Dhiraagu and Women in Tech has partnered to conduct an annual program called Girls to Code and so far 3 programs of the series have been conducted in prime locations of the Maldives.
