Orange the World Campaign – Say No To Violence Against Women!

One of the most widespread, persistent and serious human rights violation we see in the world today is violence against women and girls.

Women and girls regardless of their age, background or level of education are affected by this. Violence against women manifests in many forms such as physical, sexual, or psychological violence, as well as economic abuse and exploitation. In most cases, the perpetrators are usually an intimate partner or a family member. Violence ends up leading to serious health consequences, and sometimes, even death. Yet, the matter still remains largely unreported due to the impunity, silence, stigma and shame surrounding it.

Every year, 25th November is observed as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women for the purpose of raising awareness and to galvanize action to end gender based violence faced by women and girls all over the world. After this, in the next 16 days which follows, a global campaign will be held annually for the same purpose.

As we mark the day this year, it is important to be aware of the fact that emerging data and reports have clearly indicated all types of violence against women and girls, especially domestic violence, has intensified since the outbreak of the global coronavirus pandemic. Thus, more needs to be done to prioritize addressing the matter as part of COVID-19 response and recovery efforts.

If you have experienced gender based violence or abuse, know that you are not alone. 1 in 3 women and girls experience some form of violence in their lifetime. If you ever feel threatened, unsafe or need assistance, we urge you to contact your local help lines. You can find a list at this link
