Dhiraagu Closes Deal With HDC On Leasing Land For Landing Station Of The Global Submarine Cable System

Yesterday, Dhiraagu has signed the agreement with Housing Development Corporation (HDC) for the leasing of land for the landing station of the Global Submarine Cable System. The landing station is to join the Maldives to the international super high-way SEA-ME-WE 6 Submarine Cable system paving way for high-speed internet service in the country.

In early 2022, Dhiraagu partnered with a pool of 13 global telecommunication and tech companies in an effort to connect Maldives to prominent Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) and Data Centres (DCs). These integral focal points are located all across South Asia and Europe and will assist in providing greater internet speeds to Maldives with enhanced quality as well.

To carry out this project, Dhiraagu is taking essential measures to establish the Maldives branch of the cable to land in a new cable station in Hulhumale’. Therefore, a leasing of land agreement was signed between HDC and Dhiraagu to initiate the development of the landing station. The ceremony which was held at the HDC building took place yesterday with the Managing Director of HDC, Mr. Suhail Ahmed signing on behalf of the corporation. Mr. Ismail Rasheed, the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Dhiraagu represented the company during the signing ceremony.

Spanning a distance of 19,200 km the ultra-modern submarine cable system will be able to connect Maldives to international hot-spots in South East Asia, the Middle East and Western Europe with countries such as Singapore and France among the hubs. This project is estimated to be finished during the first quarter of 2025.

A crucial investment by Dhiraagu to integrate its network with important destinations around the world, the project will improve the Maldives global connectivity by scales. Moreover, it can lead to more affordable prices whilst retaining the quality and resilience of the services provided by Dhiraagu. In addition to this, this project will place Dhiraagu at the forefront of emerging technologies such as 5G, Artificial Intelligence and AR leading the way for improvements in Dhiraagu businesses, games and other services.
