Tender Re-Opened For Installation of 40MWH BESS Under The ARISE Project

Ministry of Environment, Climate Change & Technology has reopened the tender for the 40MWH Batter Energy Storage System (BESS) which is featured under the ARISE Project.

The Maldivian Government received funding from the World Banks to conduct the Accelerating Renewable Energy Integration and Sustainable Energy (ARISE) project. As part of this project, the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change & Technology wishes to employ some of the funding towards installing BESS in selected islands across the country.

The tender was re-opened because the first tender which was announced last month did not receive much support. Hence this time, the request for bids have been opened without the prequalification process. Interested bidders can submit their bids before 13:00 hours on Thursday,27th October 2022.

The BESS will be installed in 11 atolls across 19 islands. Some of these islands include Addu City, Fuvamulah City, Kulhudhufushi City, GDh. Thinadhoo and B.Eydhafushi. Through these systems, solar powered electricity can be generated and stored. Moreover, the installation of these renewable energy systems will bring a solution to the issues that normally result in power cuts in the islands.

The ARISE project is a 5-year project and paves way for more sustainable developments. Apart from the BESS systems, the project will also see to the installation of 36MW Solar Systems in different areas of the Maldives. The upgrading of the electricity grids in these islands are also scheduled as part of this project.

The Government’s aim is to minimize the cost of fuel and generate electricity in a clean energy process that is environmentally friendly as well. The government’s strategic plan also focuses on achieving energy milestones such as committing to become a net-zero emission country by 2030.
