STELCO to Build the Largest Powerhouse in the Maldives Next Year

State Electric Company (STELCO) has announced plans to build the largest powerhouse in the Maldives in the upcoming year. The powerhouse will have the capacity to produce 100 megavolts of current once completed.
 
Managing director of STELCO, Ahmed Shareef stated that the technical formalities of the project has already commenced, and is underway while talking on the Raajje Miadhu program on PSM news. He mentioned that STELCO is working closely with the Ministry of Environment, Climate change and technology to collect technical information related to the project and is seeking a consult at the moment. He said that once this project is completed the current-producing capacity need not be increased till 2030.
 
He also remarked that the opportunity for interested candidates to submit proposals will be open soon once the financial model of the project is determined. The project is set to commence in the first three months of next year.
 
The powerhouse will be constructed next to the “Fifth Power Project” powerhouse in Hulhumale’ phase 1. The Fifth Power Project is the current largest powerhouse with a capacity of producing 50 megavolts of electricity.
 
The decision to build the 100 megavolt powerhouse was to cater for the large and growing populations of the greater male’ region and the new populations that would settle in Hulhumale’ phase 2.
