The Maldives Judicature Act (Act No. 22/2010) had its fourth amendment on Monday, which was ratified by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. On June 27, 2022, at the 19th session of the legislature, the law was approved by the Parliament.
The amendment specifies that all court sessions and the offices of the High Court justices should be located in Malé. It also describes the rules for closing the High Court's northern and southern divisions and transferring their operations and cases to the High Court.
The measure also transfers to the Department of Judicial Administration all the resources and personnel of the previous Northern and Southern High Court branches (DJA). Within the first 60 days of ratification, DJA is required to transfer the workers to other judicial bodies while maintaining their employment. The law is now in effect after being ratified and being published in the Government Gazette.
Furthermore, the Maldives Fisheries Act's first amendment (Act No. 14/2019) was approved by the president on Wednesday. On Thursday, June 30, 2022, at the 22nd sitting of its second session, the Parliament approved the change.
The Maldives Transport Authority is removed from the list of organizations stated in Section 56 of the law as a result of the repeal of the Maldives Transport Authority Act (Act No. 3/2016) on December 13, 2021.
The section now requires the relevant ministry to develop and implement a monitoring, control, and surveillance system for overseeing and controlling fishing in accordance with this law after consulting with the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), Coastguard, Maldives Police Service (MPS), Maldives Customs Service, and other pertinent agencies. The act went into force after being ratified and was published in the Government Gazette.
