In order to offer a sustainable supply of fruits and vegetables, Agro National Corporation (AgroNat) has announced that plans are being made to implement a new farming model.
According to AgroNat, the new approach is considerably dissimilar from its contract farming model, under which local farmers now grow 17 different kinds of fruits and vegetables. The new model will concentrate on six goods that can be produced sustainably all year round. As a result, the firm announced that 100,000 square foot land plots from islands with plenty of land will be allocated to complete this project.
Additionally, according to AgroNat, the new model will allow for the production of watermelon, papaya, cucumber, and pumpkin. The new farming strategy also aims to stop these imports into the Maldives in the near future. The company claimed that producing these goods in huge quantities will make it easier for resorts to maintain a steady supply of them.
The government created AgroNat to market agricultural products from nearby farms and give farmers a better wage. With farmers, the firm has agreements in place for a variety of fruits and vegetables. To help local farmers make these goods and market their produce, AgroNat is offering them technical and financial support.
