Tree Top Hospital Successfully Completes ACL Surgery for Patient with Congenital Heart Disease

For a visitor with congenital heart disease, Tree Top Hospital has finished a challenging anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction procedure. The 19-year-old Swiss woman Leanne Glauser was born with Complex Cyanotic Heart Disease. Heart defects brought on by cyanotic congenital heart disease (CCHD) reduce the amount of oxygen delivered to the body. Cyanosis, a bluish tint on the skin, can result from this.

Leanne enjoys playing football and sustained an injury in 2021 that resulted in ACL damage. She initially believed it to be a minor sprain, but she later discovered it was actually a complicated injury to her ACL ligament.

The ACL ligament, which is located in the middle of the knee and is essential for the stability of the joint, was found to have been torn after a clinical evaluation. The quadriceps muscles in the thigh were simultaneously made weaker by the injury there. One of the most dangerous sports injuries, an ACL tear can leave a person vulnerable and can only be treated surgically.

At Tree Top Hospital, Leanne underwent arthroscopic ACL reconstruction under the direction of orthopedic surgeon Dr. Kanninraj Marimuthu. "I know it is usually a hectic process to get the preliminary investigations and examinations done prior to a surgery, but I had a wonderful time with the team at TTH," Leanne said of her time at Tree Top Hospital. Leanne is very eager to resume playing football now that the surgery was successful.

Dr. Kanninraj shared insights on the surgery, “ACL surgery is a routine surgery but this was a complex clinical situation especially from Anesthesia and Cardiology point of view due to the heart disease. Leanne underwent surgery and was able to walk the same day evening. She is progressing well after the surgery. We wish her the best and hope she can return to the football pitch soon”.

Knee surgery, shoulder surgery, sports medicine surgery, and joint replacement surgery are Dr. Kanniraj's areas of expertise as an orthopedic consultant surgeon. After earning his MBBS from Madras Medical College in India, he underwent orthopedic training (MS Ortho) at Sawai Man Singh Medical College in India. He received the Bombay Orthopedic Society's All India Best Resident Orthopedic Surgeon Award for his clinical and academic excellence during his residency.
