The Maldivian Rufiyaa's new currency sign has been officially unveiled by the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA). The sign is a horizontal stroke added to the Dhivehi "Thaana" letter "Raa." Ms Aminath Shauna, the Minister of Environment, Climate Change, and Technology, unveiled the new Rufiyaa currency symbol in a formal ceremony that took place on Sunday, July 3, at the MMA headquarters.
The authority to choose a currency symbol for the Maldivian Dhiveh Rufiyaa announced a design competition in 2021 where Mr Hassan Shujau's symbol was chosen out of 70 incredible entries. Before choosing Shujau's minimalist design as the official sign to represent the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), a special judges' panel had carefully curated and evaluated each of the proposed designs.
Minister Shauna asserted that using a Dhivehi letter as the symbol to represent the Maldivian currency is an honor for everyone while speaking at the launching ceremony. The minister recommended stepping up currency digitization efforts and moving quickly to add the symbol to digital platforms.
About 50 countries around the world have their own official currency symbol. The Maldives will now be listed alongside these nations as a result of the introduction of a currency sign. Furthermore, a Currency Symbol Guideline was also further established by MMA.
Governor of Maldives, Mr Ali Hashim provided assurance that the central bank would make efforts to ensure that the public was familiar with the currency symbol and to encourage its use in documents. He also reaffirmed the efforts being made by the central bank to create a "Unicode Standard" for the symbol. Future money printed is anticipated to bear the new currency symbol.
