As part of the initiatives to strengthen the health sector in the Maldives, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in December 2021 between the Health Ministry and the Cuban government. In this regard, the first wave of Cuban specialized doctors has begun to arrive; as of today, four doctors arrived on Wednesday. On July 3rd, 12 additional specialists will arrive.
State Minister Dr. Shah Abdulla and Cuban Health Minister Dr. Jose Angelo signed the Memorandum of Understanding during a ceremony held in Cuba back in December 2021. The MOU specifies the areas of cooperation as the hiring of medical doctors and allied health professionals, the development of human resources for the Maldivian healthcare industry, the testing of pharmaceuticals and food samples, and the provision of microbiological, chemical, and environmental laboratory services.

A Hematologist and a Psychiatrist for the National Drug Agency (NDA), a family physician for Dhamana Veshi, an internal medicine specialist to work in atolls, along with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and radiologists, are among the specialists set to arrive from Cuba under this MoU.
Furthermore, through this MoU, the Maldives and Cuba can collaborate to strengthen the country's healthcare system. In order to meet the demands of our health sector, the health ministry seeks to strengthen primary healthcare and hire medical specialists from Cuba. Chair and Members of the Maldives-Cuba Parliamentary Friendship Group were also there to receive the four doctors that arrived on Wednesday.
