Tourism Ministry Authorizes Dutch Docklands Maldives to Inaugurate Floating City Development

Dutch Docklands Maldives obtained the final signatures required to launch the floating city at a ceremony held in Male on Thursday. To operate the project using the integrated tourism model, a million-dollar alternating payment fee was needed. The Maldives Floating City should move forward using an Integrated Tourism model, according to the Government's Economic Council's recommendation.
 
Dutch Dockland Maldives is a Public Private Partnership with the Maldives government. Paul Van de Camp, CEO, and the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Tourism signed the agreement on Thursday. Tourism Minister Dr. Abdulla Mausoom observed the signing.
 
Mr. Van de Camp expressed his excitement at the occasion that development of the Maldives Floating City may now begin. BISON is building the first block of floating homes, which will be moved to the Lagoon and opened in August following the school holidays. The public will be able to visit and see firsthand how the residences will look.
 
The Maldives Floating City development's marine engineering, technical details, and specifications have been finished, and building will commence as soon as the remaining government clearances are given. The modular city's construction is slated to begin in January 2023 and will take 4 to 5 years to complete.
 
The Maldives Floating City is an innovative housing project that is being built in a lagoon 15 minutes by boat from Male'. The floating metropolis will be built using the newest floating technology from the Netherlands, with 5,000 housing units moored to the lagoon floor and linked together to provide a safe and comfortable environment.
