European Investment Bank Signs with Maldivian Government for Financing

In order to finance the Maldives Covid-19 Health Facility Project, which was developed under the EIB's South Asia Public Healthcare COVID-19 Programme Loan introduced in 2021, the Government of the Republic of Maldives and the European Investment Bank (EIB) have signed a finance contract for an amount of EUR 18,400,000 (Euro Eighteen Million Four Hundred Thousand).

The agreement was signed by the Minister of Finance, Mr. Ibrahim Ameer, and the European Investment Bank's Global Partners Director, Ms. Maria Shaw. The ceremony took place at the European Development Days (EDD) event in Brussels, Belgium.

This loan is extremely advantageous, and the funds will be used to build a cutting-edge National Health Laboratory and 18 isolation facilities in the atolls, increasing the nation's resistance to COVID-19 and potential pandemics in the future.

This project will increase the health centers' current capacity and strengthen vital analytical capabilities for the country's food and pharmaceutical safety as well as for the prevention, control, and monitoring of infectious diseases. The project will also enable the Maldives' national healthcare system to be modernized and decentralized.
