MIFCO x Dhivehi Masveringe Jamiyya to Conduct Diving Programs for Local Fishermen

MIFCO, the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited, has decided to offer open water diving lessons to local fishermen. MIFCO and the Maldivian Fishermen's Association have collaborated on the program. The open water diving courses are designed to teach people how to collect bait for fishing. The courses also aim to reduce the number of accidents that occur while diving for bait and to raise awareness about safe diving.

The diving courses will begin on the islands of Gaafu Alifu and Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll in the first phase. The courses, according to MIFCO, will allow fishermen to get open water diving training for a low cost and with minimal travel. MIFCO plans to conduct rescue and emergency first responder courses for local fishermen in addition to open water diving courses.

MIFCO (Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Ltd) is a state-owned fishing company that was founded with the sole purpose of providing economic opportunities for the Maldives' fishing community and supporting the Maldives' economy. MIFCO was founded in 1993 with the goal of transforming the Maldives' fishing industry by adding commercial value to the daily catch.

The Maldivian Fishermen's Association (MFA) was established on April 8, 1993 as a non-governmental organization with the goal of developing the Maldivian fishing industry by educating, providing incentives, facilitating market options, and gathering and disseminating information about new technologies to local Maldivian fishermen. The association works closely with international and regional fishery associations and intergovernmental bodies.
