AG Attends the UNDP's Integrated Governance Programme Phase III's First Board Meeting

At the first board meeting, that took place on June 7th, of the Integrated Governance Programme (IGP) Phase III, Attorney General, Ibrahim Riffath was present. The United Nations Development Programme's governance portfolio is known as IGP (UNDP). The Attorney General is a board member and co-chair of the IGP.

For the next five years, the IGP III program will provide technical support and assistance to the Maldives' governance sector. The new Program aims to harness the power of citizen-led open democracy, particularly based on human rights and gender equality, through digital transformation and anticipatory governance, while also improving the governance and justice system's independence, transparency, and accountability.

Members of the board discussed the evaluation of the previous cycle of the IGP, as well as the challenges that were encountered during implementation and the steps that must be taken to ensure that the current cycle is implemented successfully.

UNDP also presented the annual work plan for the first year of the IGP III at yesterday’s meeting. While the activities will be carried out under three main outcomes, all activities related to the Attorney General's Office's mandate will be carried out under Outcome Area 2: “Access to equitable justice and human rights enabled”.

The Attorney General's Office and UNDP continue to collaborate on a number of activities under IGP III, including drafting legislation, implementing new legislation, raising public awareness about the legal and justice sector and human rights, upgrading the MVLAW website to provide easy access to all Maldives laws, meeting State reporting obligations under international human rights treaties, and conducting a justice and legal sector stock-taking exercise to determine the status quo.
