President Calls For a Concerted National Effort to Safeguard the Environment

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih called for a concerted national effort to conserve nature and protect the environment on Sunday in a statement released on World Environmental Day that is celebrated globally.

Climate change is putting the Maldives' low-lying archipelago under threat of more extreme weather. President Solih emphasized the importance of immediate and bold climate action to ensure humanity's survival, whereas also he called for increased national-level efforts to protect coral reefs, beaches, oceans, and vegetation while promoting sustainable development.

Climate advocacy is one of the most contentious issues currently being debated around the world, with the Maldives serving as one of the leading proponents of action. While no country is immune to climate change, the President stressed that everyone has a responsibility to take immediate action to protect our planet.

In his statement, the President also mentioned global warming. President Solih stated that adapting to such unprecedented levels of global warming would be "near impossible," despite the fact that global temperatures are rising at an alarming rate. The President, speaking about technological advancements, including clean energy technologies, said that coordinated international and national action was required, regardless of the size of the country.

Furthermore, President Solih emphasized the importance of youth involvement in climate advocacy in order to promote environmentally friendly and sustainable lifestyles. To achieve the Maldives' goal of net-zero emissions by 2030, the President stated that single-use plastics must be phased out and cleaner energy sources must be adopted. The President also stressed the importance of separating waste at the source and protecting more areas of our natural environment.
