Only We Can Save Our Country from the Harsh Climate Change

On this years World Environment Day, it is important to focus on the notable achievements we have succeeded so far as our country works together to raise awareness in the world about our delicate environments and the important steps we have to imply in order to have a better future. So far, imports and use of certain types of plastics have been banned, waste managements have seen an improvised disposal manner implied and many more awareness events and campaigns have been carried out.

Highlighting the importance of the citizens support in maintaining such actions to keep our environments clean and hopefully plastic-free, Minister of Environment, Climate Change & Technology, Aminath Shauna has shed light on the government’s plan to inaugurate regional waste management centers across different communities of Maldives whilst speaking at the official ceremony of World Environment Day event held at Fuvahmulah city.

Minister Shauna also urged the publics support for the single use plastic phase-out plan that is being carried out by the government. Moreover, she highlights the bright future ahead in making the country plastic-free with the initiation of banning certain plastic products in Maldives.

Also speaking at the event was the Vice President, Faisal Naseem where he shed light on the Maldives' efforts to raise awareness of the climate emergency and the threats that climate change poses to small island states' survival. He sounded the alarm about the gravity of the climate catastrophe, reminding us that we only have one earth and that we must all work together to celebrate, protect, and restore it.

Furthermore, the country’s low-lying archipelago is vulnerable to the risks of intensifying weather events caused by climate change. While the Maldives is a leader in climate activism, VP Faisal stated that we must accept responsibility and work responsibly to reduce carbon emissions and plastic pollution.

VP went on to say that we must adopt environmentally friendly and sustainable lifestyles and work to change consumer habits. He also emphasized the importance of preserving the natural environment for future generations and urged the public to adopt cleaner and greener practices.

The Fuvahmulah City Biosphere Reserve logo was unveiled at the event, as was the signing of the "Implementing Sustainable Low and Non-Chemical Development in SIDS" project, which was carried out in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Minister Shauna signed the agreement on the government’s behalf.
