Consumer Ombudsman Office Website Officially Launched

On June 2nd, the official website for The Consumer Ombudsman’s Office was officially launched at a special ceremony that took place. The website will serve access to information on consumer rights & creating a direct platform for consumers to lodge complaints.
 
The Consumer Ombudsman's Office is a statutory body established by Law No. 12/2020. (Consumer Protection Act). The Act was ratified on August 31st, 2020, and went into effect on March 1st, 2021. The Act's goal is to protect consumers' rights and define the responsibilities of goods and service providers in the Maldives.
 
Under the Act, the Consumer Ombudsman of Maldives, Mariyam Shamma Ismail was appointed on August 31st, 2021. The Consumer Ombudsman is tasked with investigating complaints of non-compliance, ensuring that businesses follow the Act's provisions, and determining compensation for consumers when necessary. The Ministry of Economic Development establishes the Consumer Ombudsman's office.
 
The duties and powers of the Consumer Ombudsman are to establish a mechanism to enable reporting of violations of the Act, to investigate complaints submitted in accordance with the Act, to award compensation for the losses incurred due to non-compliance of the Act, to take action in cases of violation of the Act and lastly to publish the decisions of the ombudsman in complaints submitted.
