Minister of Environment, Climate Change & Technology, Aminath Shauna makes a promising statement to the nationals of Maldives, as the Minister announces undergoing work in digitizing national identity cards of Maldivian Nationals.
As the world moves further into the tech era, Maldives is set to mark a new milestone with the introduction of the digital ID cards. The first meeting regarding the course was held in February at the Presidents Office where Establishing and adopting a National Digital Identification System was proposed by the Environment Ministry.
The system that would be developed and maintained by the National Center for Information Technology (NCIT) and the Department of National Registration (DNR), would allow DNRs to integrate bio-metrics into their identity management systems and introduce contactless identification cards. NICT and DNR would also create digital identification apps for cellphones and expand the private sector's usage of the digital identification platform.
To be introduced in the near future, Minister Shauna also highlighted the administrations work on data protection and privacy where safeguarding all personal and private information kept online is at utmost importance. A new introduction for ‘Cyber Crime Bill’ will also make the internet a safer place for all.
