President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Friday afternoon, has arrived in the island of Ukulhas in AA Atoll to take part in the two-day ‘Viyavathi Raajje’ conference.
This conference aims to provide the opportunity to review the existing structures and find avenues for improvement. It also offers an opportunity for the administration to confer its policies to ensure good governance.
Government ministers, policy executives from the President’s Office, and technical experts from various institutions, and city council mayors, island council presidents, and presidents of Women’s Development Committees from the central atolls are in attendance at Ukulhas for the second edition of the conference.
An icebreaker sports festival was organized on Friday evening prior to the four sessions with presentations and discussions on various topics, including fiscal and legal autonomy, formulating land-use plans, the role of WDCs, crime prevention, social welfare, and climate resilience. President Solih and attendees participated in the games held at Ukulhas beach. Interactive activities such as tug-of-war, volleyball, penalty shootout and more were held during the festival.
This conference is the first such event to be held following the ratification of the eighth amendment to the Decentralisation Act, which authorised more fiscal and legal autonomy for local councils.
