MTCC Awarded With K.Kanduoiy Giri Harbor Development

Maldives Transport & Contracting Company has been awarded with the Design and Build Project of Harbor in K.Kanduoiy Giri Island by Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture in a ceremony held on May 18th, 2022. Signing on behalf of the Company was the CEO, Adam Azim and on behalf of the Ministry, Finance Executive, Eenas Naseer.

Scope of works for the project include harbor dredging operations of 10,000cbm, channel dredging of 10,000cbm, construction of a 50m breakwater, a 63m revetment, a 125m quay wall, installation of 215m sheet pile, installation of harbor pavement, installation of harbor & navigational lights. The value of the project is MVR 36 Million and the project is to be completed within 365 days.

As part of the project scope, an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) will be conducted. All stakeholders will be involved and contribute to the completion of the EIA. This procedure aids in the efficient conduct of the EIA and the provision of better engineering solutions. After the EIA is completed, all mitigating factors will be considered, and the project will be implemented using the best engineering solutions. Additionally, work will be done to install a fresh-water and salt-water line on the harbor.

K. Kanduoiy giri is an island where the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company operates (MIFCO). MIFCO's current facility on the island is capable of processing yellowfin tuna. However, due to the current harbor's poor condition and shallow depth, it has become extremely difficult for incoming and outgoing vessels to enter and dock alongside it.

As a result, vessels are unable to use the harbor for yellow-fin tuna processing, resulting in a loss for the MIFCO facility. With the completion of this project, fishing vessels will have a harbor with adequate depth and protection, allowing them to safely dock alongside the harbor and obtain service from the MIFCO facility.
