Parley Air Challenge – Save Our Ocean Together!

The Ministry of Education and Parley Maldives is calling out all schools across the country to come and participate in the Parley AIR Challenge. With the goal of fully avoiding plastics in our day-to-day lives, the challenge requires schools to wipe-out all plastics in use and to re-invent an environmentally safer alternative.

The challenge requires schools to work towards achieving three milestones by gaining a combination of points for the AIR challenge. After the sign-up, the schools must accumulate ‘Avoid, Intercept and Redesign’ points and report them throughout the year to Parley Maldives. Once a milestone is reached, the schools can choose a reward from the AIR Rewards Catalog.

Every year, an estimated 10 million metric tons of plastic waste ends up in our oceans. The ocean currents have created five massive, slow-moving whirlpools called gyres, where the plastic concentrates. The majority of the plastic garbage sinks or remains in the gyres, but a significant amount of it washes up on our beaches every day.

By taking up a challenge like this with the students, will only inspire them to do good and to bring good to the future. After all, the children are the future of the country. Hence, the Ministry along with Parley urges more schools to join in the cause to help each other make the oceans plastic free and safer for all living things!

As of 2022, 138 schools have already signed up and have shown results by planting over 1500 trees, cleaned over 25km of beaches across Maldives and successfully avoided 664k plastic pieces. What an impressive achievement made by this course and much better changes for the environment to come due to it.
