One of the sectors which experienced the impacts of the global coronavirus widespread is definitely the travel and tourism industry wing to decrease in demand for travel due to safety concerns and travel restrictions. At the wake of the pandemic locally, Maldives was left with no choice but to close its borders to contain its spread although our economy was heavily reliant on tourism for income. As a result, it was almost as if we resumed the sector from rock bottom when travel restrictions were lifted in July. At November, however, the sector is flourishing at a speedy rate.
Since border re-opening the highest number of daily tourist arrivals the country had recorded was 1582 persons on 1st of November. The Minister of Tourism, Dr. Abdulla Mausoom was thrilled to announce via twitter yesterday that halfway into the month we have broken that record with over 2000 tourists arriving to the country yesterday. He also took this opportunity to congratulate and thank all tourism industry partners and related authorities recognizing their contribution to reach this milestone.
The increase in tourist arrivals is mainly attributed to the successful marketing campaigns by those engaged in the sector in addition to Maldives being a safe holiday destination based on its geographical formation.
As the upcoming period will be the winter season, the tourist arrivals are expected to further increase as Maldives is an ideal winter holiday destination owing to its tropical climate.
