Society for Health Education (SHE) Maldives has taken initiative to host a Free Thalassemia Screening Camp prior to the celebrations of International Thalassemia Day 2022. Sponsored by Mediquip Maldives, Naadu Pvt Ltd and Mamnuz Maldives, the event will be carried out on Monday, May 9th from 9am to 4pm at SHE Building, 1st floor.
The free screening is open for any individual above the age of 10 and a National Identity Card will be required in order to get tested. Since Maldives has quite a number of Thalassemic Patients, it is important to spread awareness and help facilitate care for such patients in order to create a better living situation for the future generations.
Thalassemias are inherited blood disorders in which hemoglobin production is reduced. The severity of symptoms varies depending on the type. Anemia can range from mild to severe (low red blood cells or hemoglobin). Anemia can make you weary and make your skin pale. Bone problems, an enlarged spleen, yellowish complexion, and black urine are all possibilities.
SHE is also known to carry out a number of programs in order to raise more awareness on the subject. One of them include SHE's thalassemia prevention program. It includes a public awareness component as well as screening opportunities. SHE's prevention program aims to minimize the number of thalassaemics born in the Maldives by providing testing facilities to determine thalassaemia carrier status and promoting awareness of how the condition is passed down through the generations.
