VP Faisal Holds Meeting With UN Secretary General

Vice President, Faisal Naseem holds important meeting with the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, during VP’s trip to New York, USA. The meeting took place on Friday, May 6th at the United Nations Head Quarters in which important matters regarding the Climate and the economy were discussed between the two professionals.

The meeting started of with the appreciation of the hard work that is being done by the current President of UNPGA, Abdulla Shahid in which both parties expressed their admiration and applaud. Secretary General further noted Maldives at the forefront of climate action and highlighted the requirement of significant investments, expressing his support and solidarity with the country. VP Faisal spoke about the Maldives' need for more climate funding, as well as the role of rich countries in aiding the Maldives and other vulnerable countries.

Moreover, VP Faisal emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts by all countries to combat the pandemic, as well as financial help for the Maldives to overcome the economic repercussions. Reflecting on this, the Secretary General voiced his dissatisfaction, citing a lack of political will on global issues, particularly those that endanger vulnerable governments. He then underlined his commitment to climate action as well as his willingness to continue fighting for the rights of small and vulnerable nations.

Furthermore, women’s empowerment along with facilitating opportunities for youth were also discussed between the two delegates. Concluding the meeting, VP Faisal reaffirmed his support for stronger climate action, emphasizing that no more delays are acceptable.
