Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO) has deployed its new 2,500MT reefer vessel on its first export voyage. The vessel was acquired with the intent of making it easier to export fish through MIFCO, and this vessel in particular will be traveling to Thailand for its export operations.
MIFCO has announced that so far this year, 7 reefer vessels have been chartered from abroad to help export operations be more efficient and reduce expenditure. In addition to being used for export, the vessel will also be used for cold storage.
There are currently several projects ongoing by the government to strengthen the fisheries sector and ensure local fishermen receive fair pay for their work. As part of these projects, MIFCO facilities have been expanded to Kooddoo, Gaafu Atoll, and Felivaru, Lhaviyani Atoll, while other facilities are currently in development.
