A special ceremony was held for the handover of a gene-sequencing machine to the Maldives by the World Health Organization (WHO).
On behalf of the Maldivian government, Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem accepted the machinery.
Before this gene sequencer was gifted to the Maldives, we had to send all our samples abroad, which was costly and time-consuming. So with the addition of it into our health system, both time and money will be saved. It will also be helpful in the diagnosis of new Covid19 varients.
WHO has mentioned in their Twitter thread about this ceremony that, “Building in-country sequencing capacity will help not just with COVID-19, but also other dangerous diseases such as Influenza, Measles, etc,”
