Bringing Maldives a Solution for the High Internet Prices

Ocean Connect Maldives (OCM) is a 100% government-owned subsidiary of Maldives Fund Management Corporation (MFMC) will lead the country into a new digital age with the first-ever direct connection to an International Submarine Cable System in the Maldives. OCM says that the cable is estimated to land and be usable before the end of 2023.

The new project is said to be a catalyst for the rapid growth and strengthening of the digital backbone of the nation. It is a very promising new potential to lay the foundation for the new digital infrastructure in the Maldives. It will be a support system for the growth in digital products, services, and data consumption; providing the highest quality, reliable gateway internet access at the low costs expected by the modern-day consumer.

The reason why this will allow the internet prices to go down is due to the fact that this project will result in a sharp downwards in annual operational expenditure on data and internet for the Government while doubling the current internet capacity at the same time. This will be a huge relief for everyone involved in the industry as well.

The first thing needed to be done for the submarine cable is a survey of the area where it will be, and this usually takes 4 to 6 months. However, OCM said that they are confident that they can finish the survey in only one month.

The boat named "Ocean Survey" is estimated to finish its work on the 11th of April.
