Today, Maldivians mark our 55th Anniversary as a member state of the United Nations. The date is not solely significant just because of that; but the occasion also almost coincides with the 75th anniversary of the United Nations, itself.

The President of Maldives, his excellency, Mr. Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had sent a message addressing the joyous occasions, earlier today. He expressed gratitude towards the United Nations’ Security Council for recommending our membership to the General Assembly, as at that time when we declared as an independent nation on 26th July 1965, a majority of the international community doubted this tiny island with a population of less than 200,000 people could support and stand on our two-feet as a sovereign nation.

The president further highlighted how Maldivians have transformed the country into a middle economic nation, established by our world-renowned tourism industry. He also took note that Maldives is one of the most active small state in acting corroboratively with our international peers in dealing with and resolving pressing global issues, such as climate changes.
Additionally, the President have vowed that Maldives would remain as a nation that will diligently abide by the principles and values adopted in the United Nations’ Charter.
