Those with mobility impairments across 20 islands have now received a motorized wheelchair, courtesy of the Bank of Maldives (BML). With the new 34 recipients, it makes up to a total of 170 motorized wheelchairs that BML has donated to enhance the quality of life for those that live with physical disabilities.
BML’s CEO and Managing Director, Tim Sawyer commented, “We began this program with the aim of delivering wheelchairs to every individual in the country in need of one, and we are proud to continue our work to reach this objective. The motorized wheelchairs provide greater freedom for people with disabilities to enjoy productive, independent lives wherever they are. It is heartening to see the benefits of this program across the country."
This program was started back in 2017 with the simple goal of providing a motorized wheelchair to every person in the country with a mobility impairment. This was so that they would be able to operate the wheelchair independently. Even before this, BML has always continued to support those with various programs. Most recently, BML committed to a donation of MVR100,000 to Maldives Association for Persons with Disabilities to run its ‘Healthy PWDs program’ in December last year.
