On Saturday, ADK Hospital tweeted that they had successfully completed the first-ever, Trans-Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) procedure in an 81y old Maldivian man.
This procedure is one that replaces diseased heart valves without the need for open-heart surgery in carefully selected patients. It carries less risk than open heart surgery as it is less invasive.
Footage of the surgery along with a 3D model video of what happens inside the body during the procedure was uploaded by ADK Hospital on Twitter. Viewer discretion is advised.
The procedure was carried out by a team of specialists.

According Mayo Clinic website, Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is a minimally invasive heart procedure to replace a thickened aortic valve that can't fully open (aortic valve stenosis). The aortic valve is located between the left lower heart chamber (left ventricle) and the body's main artery (aorta). If the valve doesn't open correctly, blood flow from the heart to the body is reduced.
We thank the team who performed the surgery as well as ADK Hospital congratulations on this important milestone.
