What To Expect From The Official Visitation Of India’s Foreign Secretary To The Maldives

Following the grand visit of the 70th Secretary of State of the United States of America to the Maldives, the country has welcomed another high ranking government official – this time from Republic of India.

The current and the 33rd Foreign Secretary of India, Mr. Harsh Vardhan Shringla arrived in Maldives late last evening, upon invitation from the Maldivian Foreign Secretary, Mr. Abdul Gafoor Mohamed. He was received at Velana International Airport by Joint Secretary Ms. Mariyam Midhfa Naeem. This is his first official visit since assuming office. He is scheduled to be in town up until 10th November.

There are several outcomes you can expect to see from this symbolic visit. Firstly, he will be signing an agreement in relation to funding the Greater Male’ Connectivity Project along with two other Memorandums of Understandings for high-impact community development projects. The Foreign Secrtary will also make courtesy calls to the President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed and selected key ministers of the cabinet and government officials. Discussions that will be held so with these government officials will be of matters pertaining to the current status of ongoing projects between the countries.

Apart from this, he will be inspecting work sites of ongoing projects which have been funded by India – one of the main one being the Ekuveni Running Track renovations. He is also set to make an appearance at a handover ceremony of equipment for setting up Children’s Parks in over 67 islands.

Maldives and India has always boasted a strong bilateral relationship. This is not the first time a high ranking government official from India has made an official visit to Maldives.
