As part of celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the friendship and diplomatic relations between China and Maldives, the highlight on the Embassy of China in the Maldives’ Twitter was the China-Maldives International Ophthalmology Center which was established in Hulhuemale’ Hospital on January 13, 2020.
It was developed with donations from the Chinese government which exceeds over MVR 11.1 million, which comprise medical equipment, medicine, and medical consumables.
In their tweet, the Embassy stressed the fact that the Centre brings hope to residents with vision impairments.
The center offers highly sophisticated ophthalmic services and treatments for complicated eye conditions. In addition to this, they also offer training opportunities for local doctors, nurses, and other health professionals in ophthalmic services.
The center is said to see 160 patients a day and perform one surgery every 7 minutes. They boast hundreds of surgeries with no complications,
Dr. Chen Weirong from China’s Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center who heads the China-Maldives International Ophthalmology Center said that they aim to leave a permanent, and modern ophthalmology center for the Maldivian people.
“Our aim this time is to leave a permanent ophthalmology center for the Maldivian people; a modern ophthalmology center. Besides leaving behind equipment and instruments, we are training local staff. Talents are very important,” she had said.
