Government in Discussion with Stakeholders Regarding Human Resource Development

Vice President, Mr. Faisal Naseem, met with stakeholder ministries and officials from Maldives National University (MNU) on 20th September 2020 at the President’s Office for the discussion of strengthening local human resources, in order to boost national growth.

The meeting was attended by the Special Advisor on Social Policy at the President’s Office, Mr. Musthafa Luthfee, Minister of Education, Dr. Aishath Ali, Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Ibrahim Hassan, Minister of Tourism, Dr. Abdulla Mausoom and faculty administrators from the MNU.

During the discussions, Vice President raised the government’s concerns in respective of the shortage of local skilled-workers’ to stakeholders who in return shared the challenges faced by them on finding and nurturing local skilled-workers’. Concerns were especially raised about the lack of Maldivian nationals employed in senior positions within the tourism industry, which is the primary source of income in the Maldives.

To overcome the standing situation regarding the shortage of local skilled-workers’, the government wishes to prioritize facilitation opportunities for the younger local workforce with the purpose of enhancing their skillsets. The Vice President urged the ministries and MNU to collaborate on developing learning programs and trainings needed for the key development areas, an example being tourism. He has further highlighted that programs and trainings developed for the purpose must be easily accessible for remote islands, far from the capital.
