Making the Fishing Community of Maalhendhoo Island Happy

The island of Maalhendhoo in Noonu Atoll celebrates the completion of a fish filleting platform constructed by Society for Leaders Initiate Development (SLID), a NGO based on the island. The project was carried out with the support of BML’s ‘Community Fund’ program.

An exciting fish cutting competition was held to mark the grand opening of the space which gained major popularity in the island community.

‘The aim of the project was to find a solution for the difficulties that our fishermen faced.’ said an Official from SLID. In the past, fish filleting was done on the jetty of the island which was made difficult in bad weather conditions.

‘Through this project, we hope it benefits the islanders and the local fishermen to cut and sell fish in a more convenient manner. Our sincere gratitude and thanks go to Bank of Maldives for their financial support to implement this important project.’ he said.

Opened on Jan 1, 2022, this platform now has storage units, clean water, and workstations for 8 people to fillet at once. Appropriate lighting fixtures will allow for work to continue in the night as well. A drainage system to remove waste water is also in place in addition to dustbins placed in the area.

BML has contributed to 60 projects nationwide through the Community Fund since its introduction.
