Omicron First Case Found In Maldives!

The World Health Organization (WHO) has classed Omicron, which was initially identified from South Africa on November 24th, 2021, as a highly transmissible virus of concern, the same classification as the dominant Delta version.

Following the discovery of Omicron last week, the Maldives implemented new travel restrictions just recently. Tourists from seven southern African nations; South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique, Lesotho, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Eswatini, are prohibited from entering the country, while locals and work visa holders are obliged to quarantine.

On November 4th, HPA has announced the very first confirmed case of the Omicron variation, adding to the growing number of nations where the new and potentially more contagious COVID-19 form has been discovered.

According to HPA, the case was discovered by genetic sequencing of a tourist's positive sample. The organization does not specify where the tourists came from or when they were found to be positive.

Stay safe everyone!
