On November 30th, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Ministry of Transport & Civil Aviation and Ministry of Environment, Climate Change & Technology. The MOU was signed under the effort to build an integrated, sustainable, and low-emission transportation system in the Maldives.
For the signing ceremony, Environment Minister, Aminath Shauna & Transport Minister, Aishath Nahula signed on behalf their respective ministries.
Financed from a grant from Global Environmental Facility (GEF), under this project, the government is set to bring two mini electric buses, establishment of a designated charging station along with an Integrated Transport Master Plan will be established in the Male’ Region.
This project was launched in hopes of reducing reliance on diesel and omit harmful emissions effecting Global Warming. The project is in full support of reaching Net Zero by 2023.
During the ceremony, Environment Minister, Shauna announced the future project of introducing a Sharing Bicycle Scheme in Hulhumale’ City. With the ultimate goal of reducing the usage of cars and motorcycles, using environmentally friendly mode of transportation is highly encouraged by the Ministries.
