‘Maldives Is Moving Forward In The Field Of Renewable Energy’ – Minister Shauna

Exciting news as the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change & Technology has contracted Sino Soar Hybrid Technology, a company from China, to build solar power plants on 12 islands in Thaa Atoll bringing it one step closer to the mission of making Maldives an environmental phenomenon.

At a special ceremony conducted at the Environment Ministry, an agreement for the design, delivery, installation, and maintenance of GRID-TIER Solar PV-Diesel Power Generation plants was signed by Minister of Environment, Climate Change & Technology, Aminath Shauna and Project Manager of Sino Soar Hybrid Technology.

To be completed in 360 days, the scope of works included in the project consists of establishing 2.5 megawatts of Solar PV in 12 residential islands in Thaa Atoll, installment of 975 kilowatts of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) along with three 1,800 meters of cable set-up. Additionally, a modern generator control room is also in the scope of the works contracted.

The development of solar power plants, according to the Environment Ministry, will save up to MVR 12 million per year and reduce CO2 emissions by 2,900 tons! Minister Shauna highlighted that the ceremony was part of the important steps being taken towards achieving net-zero before or in 2030.
