Digital Front Office of Each Island, ‘islands.mv’ Handed Over to the Tourism Ministry

“islands.mv” is a web portal belonging to the government which was launched back in 2019 by the President, His Excellency Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. It was designed by the software development team of National Centre for Information Technology (NCIT) for the specific goal of empowering island councils in carrying out their duties which fell under the administration’s first 100 day goals.

The web portal is designed to act as the ‘digital front office’ if each island consisting of comprehensive information for potential tourists regarding standout features, tourist facilities and resources available, and economic activities in the island. It was noted by the developers that gathering all the needed information for the portal was extremely challenging. Up until now the web portal was maintained by the Ministry of Communication, Science and Technology in collaboration with NCIT. However, a handover had taken place yesterday in which the web portal has been transferred to the Ministry of Tourism during an informal ceremony.

At present, the web portal is also seen as marketing tool promoting guesthouses, restaurants and other tourist facilities available in inhabited islands. It is anticipated to be beneficial in reinstating local tourism in the country post the COVID-19 pandemic.
