The tourism sector is the backbone of Maldivian economy whereas most number of locals are engaged different types of businesses in the industry. Millions of tourists usually arrive in Maldives per year to experience the serene island life. When they return, I am pretty sure their experience here remains somewhere deep in the heart. But, there is absolutely a way they can portray this to their loved ones back at home and it is through the souvenirs they return with!
Local souvenir shops usually sell a wide range of products from clothing, bags, accessories, perfume, jewelries and handicraft works connecting the diverse and rich island culture into them which are usually locally made. There is a number of souvenir shops at resorts, islands and also in urban areas. It brings profit to talented locals producing these shopping pieces.

However, souvenir shops and what they sell is not the strongest selling point for Maldives owing to the fact that the segment is a bit organized. In order to develop businesses operating souvenir shops and to facilitate a better income for them the Ministry is taking an important step by initiating to draft a directory of all souvenir business operators. In this regard, the Ministry notes its desire to lend a helping hand at their best capacity to develop souvenir businesses in operation which would effectively boost the tourism industry even more.
Accordingly, if you wish to get registered in the directory, your applications should be sent to the email info@tourism.gov.mv prior to 8th November 2020. Application form will be available in the Ministry’s website.
