For the first time in 12 years, the president of Maldives has participated in the 26th UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, where President Ibrahim Solih fought for climate change along with the Minister of Environment, Climate Change & Technology, Aminath Shauna.
Speaking at the conference, President Solih highlighted the grim reality of a small country like Maldives, that is often cited as one of the low-laying countries that could disappear off the map because of the climate crisis taking place. He mentioned that based on science, the capacity to protect the people of Maldives, their health and safety is being driven to the brink.
Furthermore, President Solih expressed the determination to lead by example by taking the most ambitious climate actions and committing to achieve a low-emission development and a climate-resilient future. Concluding his speech, President Solih reminded the delegates of the Paris Agreement that was pledged to provide $100 billion annually to developing vulnerable states.
