Kasabu Weaving Workshop Conducted by ‘Kasabu By Hidha’ Concludes

The most striking feature on the national dress of the Maldives must be the striking weaving on the neckline made from gold and silver threads patterned into a story. With hints of red and green dotted through the designs, the ‘Kasabu’ stands out as a truly Maldivian element.

‘Kasabu by Hidha’ is a local business by Hidhana Latheef, a passionate weaver. She has taken her love for the traditional art and incorporated it into various designs of jewelry and decorative items around the household. It immediately caught the eye of the public, and soon became a trending style.

On World Tourism Day, the Kasabu weaving workshop conducted by Kasabu by Hidha came to an end, and a celebratory ceremony was held to hand over certificates to participants who successfully completed the workshop. Gracing the ceremony as Chief Guest, Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage congratulated the participants and Hidha for promoting the iconic tradition of Kasabu weaving in the Maldives.

Minister Yumna encouraged the participants to find more and innovative ways to take the tradition forward, and highlighted that tourism brings the much-needed push for such crafts to get exposure on a wider and economically beneficial spectrum.

Hidha spoke at the ceremony and brought forward the courageous and brave women of the Maldivian history who worked hard to carry forward the tradition of Kasabu weaving to our generations. It is her hope that participants of the workshop will continue to take the torch forward across the nation, and celebrate our culture at all times.

18 participants, including 1 male participant, received their certificate of completion of the workshop during the ceremony. This is the 7th successful batch of the workshop. Every year, free slots are given to 3 differently abled students to participate in the workshop. Hidha announced that the next intake will be on October for another eventful workshop, and more courses will be introduced down the pipeline.
