MTCC has signed with the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure towards implementing shore protection at Th. Gaadhifushi and Th. Buruni. CEO Adam Azim signed on behalf of MTCC and Director-General Ms. Fathimath Shaana Farooq signed on behalf of the MNPHI.
The project is defined as the Development, Implementation, and Maintenance of sustainable coastal protection to prevent erosion and flooding to the maximum extent possible on the southern islands of Maldives.
Shore Protection is absolutely vital for the survival of our beloved as approximately 67 percent of inhabited islands in the Maldives reported varying degrees of beach erosion in 2013, the environment ministry reports that, of the 114 islands that have reported erosion, some 67 are experiencing severe erosion and over 80 percent of the total land area of the Maldives is less than one meter above mean sea level, making it one of the world’s most vulnerable countries to climate change.
The Th. Gaadhifushi Shore Protection Project works involve the construction of a 500m revetment and construction of 15m groyne with Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). The value of the project is MVR 17.69 million and the project is to be completed within 180 days.
The Th. Buruni Shore Protection Project works involve 21,181.80cbm of beach filling, construction of a 220m revetment, and construction of 369m breakwater. The value of the project is MVR 28.87 million and the project is to be completed within 240 days.
The government is taking measures of coastal protection in several islands throughout the Maldives with the government budget and donor agencies in hopes of sustaining our beautiful island nation for many years to come.
