STELCO Says NO to Bottled Water in Plastic Bottles

State Electric Company is one of the biggest utility providers in the Maldives. It has always been their aim to provide all services possible in the most sustainable manner, and with the launch of ‘Fehi Dhiriulhun’ program, STELCO has made immense progress in a greener pathway forward.

The phase-out of single use plastic at STELCO began in April of this year as 35 operational engine houses of STELCO were transformed into no single-use plastic zones. One of the most major transformations planned included switching bottled water from plastic bottles to glass bottles. All necessary arrangements were put in motion immediately and STELCO is proud to announce that they have wound up bottled water production with plastic bottles. In the coming months, bottled water by STELCO will re-hit the market, but in glass bottles from now on, says Managing Director, Hasan Muqny.

As part of the phase out initiative, STELCO has provided a reusable water bag and a cloth bag to every staff member of the team. Water dispensers have also been set-up in all departments of the head office of STELCO to inspire and encourage a healthier, greener lifestyle for the employees.

STELCO already uses paper bags instead of plastic bags at its department stores and pharmacies, and urges customers to carry reusable or alternate carriers with them when shopping with STELCO. Arrangements have been made at the entryway of STELCO to store the plastic items before entering the premises to further encourage customers to stop using plastic themselves.

STELCO hopes to set example for other institutions to follow the same.
