New Consumer Ombudsperson Inducted by The President

31st August marks the rise of Uza Mariyam Shamma Ismail as the newly appointed Consumer Ombudsperson by his excellency, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, in accordance with Article 70 of the Consumer Protection Act (12/2020). 
 
The Consumer Protection Act delineates the rights of consumers when purchasing goods and services, and the measures to be taken to protect these rights. The Consumer Ombudsman mandated under this Act is tasked with ensuring businesses’ adherence to its provisions and enforcing compensation to consumers when necessary. 
 
Uza Mariyam Shamma Ismail’s unquestionably impressive career speaks for itself, an experienced lawyer with over 14 years of experience in the legal profession and public sector. She most recently served as a Legal Consultant at the Ministry of Economic Development, and had earlier filled the post of Director of Legal and Policy Affairs at the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives. She also previously served as the Registrar of the Supreme Court, from November 2008 until December 2017. Uza Mariyam Shamma Ismail attained her Advanced Diploma in Law from HELP University, Malaysia, and her Bachelor of Laws from the University of the West of England Bristol, England, in 2004.
