Children’s Ombudspersons Office (COO) Maldives, has finally completed their first audit from August 15th onwards. The audit was made in order to ensure the children’s rights are protected and they are getting no harm from the institutions taking care of the children.
Previously worked as the UNICEF National Consultant, the newly appointed experienced child advocate, Child Rights Ombudsperson, Niumaath Shafeeg stated that this audit as well as the audits that will be made in the future under this office will bring forth the issues and the unseen problems of child care institutes.
Niumaath has been overseeing all matters related to children’s rights and welfare, and assessing government compliance with the provisions of the Child Rights Protection Act. The first audit took place in “Fiyavathi”, the care institution built in Hulhumale’ for children under the age of 9 years. As per the announcement made by COO, a 6-persons team from the office made the audit and the problems noticed will be shared with the related offices.
