President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih appeals to armed forces officials to be strong in their defence of the country and the Islamic faith.
The Oath Taking and Arms Presentation ceremony held for the graduates of the 67th Basic Training Course of the Maldives National Defence Force at Kalhuthuhkalaa Koshi on Thursday night. President Solih graced the event as Chief Guest of the ceremony.
Also present at the ceremony were the First Lady Fazna Ahmed, the Minister of Defense Maria Ahmed Didi, the Minister of Defense, Major General Ahmed Shamar and other senior officials of the National Defense Forces.
President Solih described the role of MNDF officials as not only protecting the country’s armed forces, but also fulfilling civic duties and intervening every time the country or society needs your help to save the situation. He emphasized on defending the country's independence and sovereignty, and to protect the Maldivian people and the Constitution as the prime goal of every MNDF official.
In order to do so in each individuals full capacity, President Solih adviced MNDF officials to prioritize their best behavior as they resolve national difficulties. He also emphasized the need to remain free from political influence while serving the country.
The armed forces have a responsibility to protect the judicial administration from any threats or damage that could lead to system disruption. Building on this, President Solih pointed out that the current recruitment of this batch of basic training courses for the National Defense Forces occurs at a time when the world is facing many regional and international challenges in the form of terrorism and extremism. He said that MNDF officials must better understand the challenges posed by different mentalities and be prepared to deal with such situations.
Further, President Solih provided an update on the ongoing work on national defense capacity building and acknowledged the threat posed by terrorism to the country. He also expressed confidence in the Maldivian Constitution and the Armed Forces Act being a step in a right direction to implement the functions of MNDF.
Speaking to the graduates, President Solih stated that serving the military is not just a job, but a sacrifice made on behalf of the country. He added that the basic characteristics of a good national defense officer are to remain vigilant, treat civilians without prejudice, be sincere and courteous, avoid disadvantaged parts of society, and set an example for the people.
