Rayan Riyaz Abdul Wahid made headlines over the weekend with the news of his incredible achievement in the June sitting for GCE 'O' Level examinations. At just 10-years of age, he has managed to grade an A* in the subject of Chemistry, surprising himself, his parents, and the rest of Maldives too.
Now popular as the boy-genius, Rayan was invited to visit President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih at the President's Office on late Monday morning. His proud parents, mother Aishath Yumna and father Mohamed Riyaz accompanied him.
President Solih shared his delight and pride in Rayan’s accomplishment and congratulated the family for the great feat. Their pleasant conversation covered the journey of how the subject captured Rayan’s interest and what led up to the results. President was enlightened by his mother about how Rayan was always passionate about books, and her being a Chemistry teacher, Rayan has access to subject books at home. The pandemic and following lock-down allowed Rayan enough spare time to self-study and prepare for the exam.
After listening to his story, the President assured Rayan his full support in assisting him to pursue any profession of his liking when he grows up. Curious and eager, Rayan stated that he aspires to become a scientist one day, and that for now, he would much appreciate President Solih’s help in acquiring laboratory apparatus for a home lap set-up. This will allow Rayan to start with practicing small experiments.
Rayan participated in the exam as a student from Huravee School in Hulhumalé City. The Minister of Education Dr Aishath Ali, Senior Officials at the President’s Office and the Principal of Huravee School, Abdullah Rasheed, also attended the meeting to congratulate Rayan and his family. In return, Rayan’s parents were grateful for the acknowledgement of his hard work in achieving the grade and appreciated the support for the young boy.
