The Poisonous Blue-Ringed Octopus. Look But Don’t Touch!

The Blue-Ringed Octopus may be astonishing to look at with its unique blue rings that form all around its body. But what most people are not aware of is that these little octopuses could kill you with one tiny bite.

Smaller in size compared to the usual octopus, it has come to Maldives Marine Research Institute’s attention about the Blue-Ringed Octopus after being spotted a handful of times around Maldives. The institute urges the citizens to not capture these octopuses to keep yourselves out of harm’s way.

The Blue-Ringed Octopuses releases a poison called neurotoxin whilst they hunt for food. If these toxins enter our body, it takes 24 hours for it to be completely cleared from our system. Enough time for the toxins to react with your body and kill you.

The signs of neurotoxins in your body include, shortness of breath, dizziness, nauseous, numbness around your body and in worst case scenarios, heart-attack and death. Intense Medical attention will be needed at the soonest in order to prevent such cases.

Please raise more awareness about these dangerous tiny creatures and seek medical attention at the earliest if the incident occurs. Having these octopuses in domestic tanks are banned.
