Environment Ministry And WAMCO To Find A Smokeless Waste Management Solution For Maldives

For years, Thilafushi has been used as a dumping ground for waste from across the country. WAMCO and Environment Ministry hopes that with the new project in place, it will completely stop the smoke pollution caused by the burning system of waste.

The smoke brought out by the burning of waste in Thilafushi is causing a lot of damage to the climate along with pollution which causes many difficulties for the citizens residing in the neighboring island, K.Villimale’.

The Ministry and WAMCO hopes stop the smoke pollution completely by the end of October 2021 and to develop a modern solution for waste management by the end of December 2021 with the partnership from Asian Development Bank, Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank from Japan and Islamic Development Bank.

During the process, there might be difficulties of more smoke pollution as digging and other work will be carried out hence, the Ministry also apologizes in advance for the temporary discomfort that islanders in Thilafushi may face. The work is necessarily a part of the steps taken for a permanent solution to the problem therefore, humble corporation is requested.
